How to Combat Prediabetes

What is Prediabetes?

Diabetes is a very common health condition, but it normally comes gradually. Before you become diabetic, your blood sugar levels are higher than normal. When you still do not need to start and depend on prescription diabetic medication. This condition is prediabetes, and the good news is that prediabetes is treatable.


Prediabetes Symptoms

At the onset of impaired glucose intolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glucose (IFG), there are certain symptoms. These warning signs are at the ???pre-diagnosis??? stage of diabetes. Prediabetes may not have visible or obvious symptoms, but there will be subtle symptoms which protect you from full-blown type 2 diabetes.

Some warning signs of prediabetes include:

  • Fluctuating Weight: You frequently lose and gain weight.
  • Frequent Urination: You make more trips to the toilet as your kidneys are overworked.
  • Tingling Sensation: Your hands or legs feel numb from diabetic neuropathy.
  • Vision Problems: Your vision is blurred due to damaged blood vessels in your eyes.


High Blood Sugar Treatment

Prediabetes is mainly caused by insulin resistance. In other words, the pancreas does not make or use insulin effectively because of excess weight or genetic factor or another medical condition. If your doctor has confirmed you are prediabetic, you can make some lifestyle changes to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Here are four precautionary steps to control high blood sugar levels:

  • Eat Healthy: You are what you eat! Eat more vegetables, replace starchy foods like white rice and flour with whole grains. Have a glass of low-fat milk and fruits daily. Include fish, eggs and lean proteins. Contact a nutritionist to help you get on a diabetic meal plan custom-made for you. This will help you control blood sugar levels naturally. 
  • Exercise: Just 30 minutes of daily exercise, such as walking and doing yoga help prevent diabetes. Sports, Fitness and leading a more active lifestyle, such as taking the stairs and cycling to work can make all the difference. If you are serious about your fitness, you can join a gym and get a personal trainer too. 
  • Lose Weight: Studies have shown that 10 ??? 20 pounds weight loss can give near-miraculous health benefits. Losing only 5 -10 % of the initial weight can help prevent type 2 diabetes.
  • Supplement Right: When the body cannot get enough nutrients from a daily diet, it is a good idea to take vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements for diabetes.  


Who should take Metformin?

Those who get diagnosed with prediabetes are lucky. Why? Because they or their doctor has detected it early and they have a better shot at preventing type-2 diabetes or at least delaying its progression. Doctors sometimes prescribe diabetes medication, such as Metformin to control very high blood sugar levels. Metformin works for both Type-1 and Type-2 Diabetes. It prevents the liver from making glucose even when the body does not need it. Always see a doctor who knows your medical history before trying new medication or supplements. If you need to take a diabetic medicine, the endocrinologist will prescribe one with the correct dosage.


Get Tested For Diabetes

Ask a few common questions in case you suspect you could develop diabetes some day. Do you have direct family members, like brothers or sisters or parents who suffer from type 2 diabetes? Are you overweight or carry extra weight in your middle? Maybe you lead a sedentary lifestyle and eat too many carbs? Do you sit all day at the office, not get enough exercise? Do you belong to a race or ethnic population that is pre-disposed to diabetes, such as the Indian Asians and Hispanics? Are you older than 45, suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or hypothyroidism? These and other medical factors may increase your risk of becoming diabetic exponentially!

Generally, it is a good idea to get tested for diabetes annually, even when all is well. But, if you have another condition you must get regular health checkups. Then, if your glucose levels creep up, you can make lifestyle changes beforehand.
