In an exclusive interview with Zotezo, Dt. Treesa has spoken about super foods and their impact on our lifestyle. Here are the edited excerpts of the interview.
Team Zotezo: How will you define superfoods?
Dt. Treesa: Superfood is a whole food, which is high in nutrients. It’s nutrient-dense. They are mostly plant-based but some fish and dairy products are also thought to be nutritionally dense and therefore it’s good for one’s health and well being. It’s more of a marketing term. Superfood is more of a marketing term but some foods are high in nutrition. The nutritional value is very high.
Team Zotezo: Are superfoods good for a healthy lifestyle?
Dt. Treesa: Yes, definitely superfoods are good for a healthy lifestyle. They are not only brain-boosting but they can also fight diseases, help in weight loss, tackle high cholesterol and also fight cancer. And the best plus point of the superfoods is that they are pretty delicious. Superfoods in the form of supplements also can be taken because they are rich in antioxidants, high in fiber, dense in vitamins and minerals. Superfoods are also known to have deep colors and smell, which are known as phytochemicals, that offer many health benefits. So I feel that it should be included in day-to-day life. It should be included in a fresh form rather than a supplement form. But it always better to check with your nutritionist and dietitians to know that, which supplement should you use. It’s better to ask the expert. So, it does not cause any harm.
Team Zotezo: Are there any health risks associated with superfoods?
Dt. Treesa: A lot of people have unrealistic expectations like people have a poor diet and with the poor diet they go on with superfood supplements, thinking that it will solve their problems, it will help maintain a balance. However, that is not the case, diet is a very important aspect of our life. With a properly balanced diet, we can also take the superfoods as an additional benefit and I think there is no health risk associated with the superfood, but definitely, too many supplements or a combination of supplements might cause some health risks. It is very important to consult a dietitian or a nutritionist before taking any supplements.
Team Zotez: Is there anything called the superfood diet?
Dt. Treesa: There is nothing as a superfood diet, but you have to consult your dietitian or nutritionist who will incorporate superfoods in your diet, and help you with delicious recipes that you can include that will also give you the benefit of the superfood.
You can also find the recipes on google. There are a lot of recipes with superfoods in it that can be helpful. And If you want a complete diet plan then you have to go to a dietitian or a nutritionist. They will be the best to guide you.
Team Zotezo: Name the top 10 superfoods for 2020 which are good for a healthy and active lifestyle?
Dt. Treesa: There are many superfoods, but some of them which I feel should be included in the diet. Like, Acai that’s one of the superfoods, then there are Goji berries, kiwi fruit, turmeric powder, salmon fish, chia seed, flax seeds, spirulina, green tea and last one is the ginger. These are the top 10 superfoods. They are differentiated from their benefits. Each one offers a different kind of health benefit. The nutrients are different in them. If one is good at protein then the other one is anti-inflammatory. One is for weight loss and the other one has antioxidant properties. So each superfood has its plus points and its benefits.
