Water is one of the most essential components of life. Water is a tasteless and odorless liquid at room temperature. Not all water is drinking water. Also, water can sometimes be costly while some can provide more nutrients. The colorless and tasteless elixir of life comes in many types.

Now, let us see what are the different types of water which can be differentiated based on its origin, consistency, and composition.

What are the Different Types of Water?

1. Spring Water

This is a type of water that is natural water that gets collected from underground sources. It tends to leak out as spring or even a puddle. Spring Water contains natural minerals. It is naturally alkalized water claimed to be filled into bottles directly from its source.

2. Tap Water

Tap water is basically running water, city water, town water, municipal water, sink water, etc. One can get tap water directly from your faucet. It may or may not be suitable for drinking water purposes. It is widely used for household chores such as cleaning, cooking, gardening and washing clothes.

3. Mineral Water

Mineral water is the water that naturally contains minerals. You can get this from underground sources, making it rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, manganese. No further minerals can be added to that water. The water can also be given limited treatment like carbonation, iron or manganese removal, before packaging.

4. Well Water

Well water comes from sources beneath the Earth’s surface known as groundwater, which includes porous water-bearing formations as well as underground springs. The means of bringing the water up out of the well to the surface is a part of where the well water comes from. It is unfiltered water.

5. Alkaline Water

Alkaline water is nothing but the water which has a higher PH level when compared to regular water. The PH level of alkaline water is higher than 7 and hence it is less acidic than the regular tap water.

6. Purified Water

Water which after being derived from its a source has undergone a purification system in a plant. It removes all bacteria, contaminants and dissolved solids making it suitable for drinking and other purposes.

7. Distilled Water

Distilled water is one where the water has undergone a treatment that removes all its minerals and salt by the process of reverse osmosis and distillation.

Sources of Water

There are mainly 2 sources of water. One is Surface Water and the other is Ground Water.

Surface Water

Examples of surface water are lakes, streams, glacial meltdown, etc. These are generally heavily contaminated with organic matter, and low in dissolved solids.

Advantages of Surface Water

  • Easy to extract water by direct pumping
  • Water can be treated after use and put back into a river
  • Dams and reservoirs can be used for hydroelectric power
  • Reservoirs can be used for recreation

Disadvantages of Surface Water

  • Water needs some treatment before consumption
  • Surface water is seasonal
  • Construction of expensive and damaging dams may trigger earthquakes
  • Flooding of land for reservoirs
  • It requires sufficient rainfall and large river catchment

Groundwater

It lies under the surface of the land, where it travels through and fills openings in the rocks. Examples of groundwater include tube wells, springs, glaciers, rainwater, etc.

Advantages of Ground Water

  • This is free of turbidity and color
  • Can usually be used without further purification treatment
  • Found in close vicinity to consumers like rivers, lakes, etc.
  • Less costly so it is easy to distribute

Disadvantages of Ground Water

  • Has a higher mineral level content
  • Groundwater has a poor oxygen content
  • If it gets polluted, treatment for purified water can be difficult to achieve
  • It may contain chemical contaminants such as arsenic, fluorides, and nitrates

How Much Water Do You Need?

People don’t realize the true importance of drinking enough water every day. And how it impacts both your health and your weight loss efforts. Drinking just 2 cups of water, before meals, helped dieters lose an extra five pounds yearly and help to boost up metabolism. But how much water is enough? It depends on parameters like body weight, age, height, etc.

Body Weight

The first step to knowing the daily water to drink every day is to know your weight. The amount of water a person should drink varies on their weight because if you weigh more you need more water to drink.

Multiply by ⅔

Next, you should multiply your weight by 2/3 (or 67%) to determine how much water to drink daily. For example, if you weigh 75 kilograms, you would multiply that by ⅔ and you should be drinking about 2 liters of water every day.

Gender

Yes, gender has an effect on how much water you should drink. Because men and women have different body fat to water ratio. Therefore they require different amounts of water

Activity Level

Finally, you will want to adjust based on how often you work out since you are expelling water when you sweat. You should add 12 ounces of water to your daily total for every 30 minutes that you work out. So if you work out for 45 minutes daily, you would add 18 ounces of water to your daily intake.

There is actually no such water as the best one which provides health benefits better than the others.
