How Cefuroxime Works

Cefuroxime interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis by inhibiting the final step in the crosslinking of peptidoglycan strands. Peptidoglycan makes the cell membrane rigid and protective. Without it, bacterial cells rupture and die.

Interaction

Drug : aminoglycosides, loop diuretics: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.

antacids, H2-receptor antagonists, omeprazole: Decreased cefuroxime axetil absorption.

probenecid: Increased and prolonged blood cefuroxime level.
